Outdoor dining: The best garden restaurants in Barcelona

A world-renowned city such as Barcelona takes great pride in its visual aesthetics. But striking architecture and breathtaking beaches are only some of the features that attract visitors from across the globe.

When it comes to enjoying the country’s fabulous cuisine, there are a variety of garden restaurants in Barcelona to choose from; settings which make al fresco socialising a delight thanks to the views and fresh atmosphere.

Some of these gems are quite exposed, while others are a little more secretive about their hidden oases. And our votes for the most appealing garden restaurants in Barcelona are the following:

Casa Mimosa

In terms of location, the H10 Casa Mimosa Hotel is ideal. This 19th century Catalan-style building is a mere 2-minute walk from La Pedrera, and only 15 minutes from Plaza Catalunya and Ramblas.

Its El Til•ler Restaurant with adjoining garden/courtyard offers the perfect place for relaxing, complete with a century-old palm tree, an elevated swimming pool, and an area for sun lounging. Guests can also make use of the lobby bar services for a variety of à la carte dishes and drinks (including the hotel’s namesake, the ever-popular mimosa).

Totora

Originally known as ‘Tanta’ when it opened in 2012, Totora transports diners to Peru with its creative yet classic cuisine. Its 700m² layout boasts a variety of designs, including two spacious dining rooms. For a breath of fresh air, diners can retreat to the indoor terrace and garden, which can also be enjoyed from the dining area and bar.

Totora’s cuisine showcases the seafood specialities of Peru with touches of the avant-garde. Diners can enjoy traditional ceviches and ‘tiradito’, or can embrace unusual flavours such as dry veal hoofs, parmesan conchitas, and red shrimp quinoa.

Batuar

Located on the second floor of the Cotton House Hotel is Batuar, the cocktail bar and restaurant with a cosmopolitan vibe. Open from 7am until midnight, guests can expect uninterrupted service and a sophisticated ambience.

The Batuar experience is enhanced via a leafy and spacious terrace, ideal for guests looking to enjoy a scenic view with their tapas and drinks. Worth mentioning is the bar’s menu offering classic Mediterranean dishes, as well as an innovative cocktail list (including the Cotton House Hotel exclusive, the ‘Gossypium Cocktail’, a blend of pisco, curaçao blue, gin, lime and spices inspired by the turquoise Barcelona sea).

Roig Robí

Those wishing to treat themselves to a posh lunch in a walled garden need look no further than Roig Robí. A favourite among the garden restaurants in Barcelona for over 30 years, Roig Robí has been an uptown go-to haven for those wishing to dine al fresco on classic Catalan cuisine. The thick stalks of bamboo, tumbling ivy and splendid palms of the garden contrast magnificently with the adjoining conservatory dining rooms, which are more serious in appearance and vibe.

Aiding in its success is Roig Robí’s ability to serve perfect Crema Catalana – the true test of all restaurants in Barcelona.

Hotel Alma

The five-star Alma Hotel, in the heart of the Eixample district, offers two options for al fresco socialising: a rooftop terrace and an interior green garden. In the garden, culinary offerings (ranging from informal tapas to more substantial gastronomic creations) can be enjoyed at one of the carefully spaced tables (enhancing intimate conversations), or on the comfortable sofas among the lush, leafy vegetation.

Guests are also spoiled for choice with the restaurant’s offering of cocktails, as well as some of the best coffees and teas in the city.

La Balsa

As one of the most prestigious restaurants in Barcelona, every detail of La Balsa was carefully selected for an unforgettable experience. This includes its striking spiderweb-like gate, the wooden furniture, and every single tree planted in the green garden.

With two terraces (a summer and winter one) in addition to the luscious garden and indoor space, La Balsa is the perfect spot for couples, corporate clients, and families. A great blend of classic and innovative dishes showcases the passion of the restaurant’s chefs, who excel at creating Mediterranean cuisine with seasonal ingredients.

Windsor

The setting of Windsor Restaurant immediately captures the imagination – located on the ground floor of a modernist estate in the Eixample neighbourhood, this is truly the heart of Barcelona, albeit with a peaceful ambience. The Windsor chefs, who pride themselves on updating traditional Catalan recipes, are just one of the many attractions that lure diners from all across the city.

In addition to a bustling restaurant and popular bar, guests can retreat to the garden terrace, a small-yet-tranquil oasis ideal for anything from a relaxing lunch to a prolonged al fresco dinner. And thanks to a retractable roof, the garden terrace can be enclosed (during winter and summer), providing perfect protection from the elements.

A Contraluz

What makes A Contraluz stand out amongst the garden restaurants in Barcelona is the fact that it’s a restaurant almost hidden inside a garden. Located in the exclusive neighbourhood of Tres Torres, A Contraluz’s greenery is quite catching: lavish ivy, climbing plants snaking up pergolas to offer shade at noon, and lush bushes and trees enhancing an already magical setting.

The Mediterranean dishes (which include anything from tapas and salads to pastas and meats) are all perfectly executed with a modern flair, yet are not intimidating. And since it’s in a convenient setting (a short subway ride from Plaça Catalunya with the FFCC train), there’s no excuse not to have A Contraluz on one’s must-visit list.
